Micro Midgets / Karts

 

        Micro-Midgets  Open-Class

  1. Age. Drivers age 12 and up may compete in this Class. The Promoter holds discretion for allowing drivers younger than 12 to compete in this class.
  2. Roll cage. Roll cages shall be at least 1 inch .065 wall thickness, or 1 1/8 inch .065 wall thickness, or 1 1/4 inch .065 wall thickness. Roll cage shall be made of chromoly steel or equivalent material. The front section of the cage shall be no further back than the steering wheel. Roll cage shall have sufficient fore and aft bracing and strength to support the weight of the car & driver in case of an upset. Cage shall have gussets at the intersecting bars to the uprights. Bends must have at least 3 inch radius. No square or pointed corners allowed. Roll cage must be a minimum of 3 above the driver’s helmet. It is mandatory to install a cross brace behind the seat to support the shoulder harness.
  3. Electric's and Electronics. On and off switches must be on dash, top of the cowl or on steering wheel. On/off switch must be connected and functional. No radio communication is allowed with the car or the driver.
  4. Fuel: All fuel tanks must be equipped with a one-way check valve designed to prevent the spillage of fuel from the fuel tank vent in the event of a rollover.* Open Class cars may run approved gasoline, ethanol or methanol.
  5. Weight:* Open Class: 600cc powered cars: minimum car and driver weight 750 lbs; Open Class 601 - 619cc minimum car and driver weight 800 lbs; 620 - 636cc minimum car and driver weight 825 lbs.
  6. Suspension. All suspension bolts except wheel nuts must be secured by some type of locking device. All types of shock absorbers are legal.
  7. Tires And Wheels. Any wheel size and tire combination may be used, but tires may not exceed 22 1/2 inches in height. Wheels must be held on with 4 or more standard lug nuts or knock-off hubs. 4 cylinder 600cc cars only; Right rear tire must be a minimum 50 durometer compound or harder Hoosier or American Racer (McCreary) tire. Tires may be grooved or siped. Tire durometer check should be done at least 5 minutes after the races to allow for cool down. Treadwidth must be maximum 52 inches or minimum 32 inches, center to center of tires.
  8. Wheelbase shall not exceed a maximum 70 inches, or be less than minimum 50 inches, center of front axle to center of rear axle. For steering, front wheels must be connected by a solid or tubular tie rod. All cars must be rear wheel drive only.
  9. Bodies. All cars must have complete bodies. Tail sections must be in place for time trials and all races. There must be a metal firewall between driver and engine at all times. Body of car must be made of aluminum, metal, fiberglass or high impact plastic. All cars must be painted an attractive color or colors. No rear view mirrors. The only part of the car allowed to be dismantled for driver to enter or exit is a quick-release steering wheel hub. The minimum opening on the right side of the car will be 14” from the top of the roll cage to the top of the mud guard/sissy bar, and 16” minimum from the front down tube to the back. All mechanically operated devices must be mounted below the driver’s shoulders for safety.
  10. Transmission. Any type transmission is legal. Any car equipped with a shifting mechanism must have this device mounted in the driver’s compartment. Shift levers may mount outside the driver’s compartment on opposite side of car from the chain drive. Chain guards will be made of .090 inch thick aluminum or equivalent and will run on top of chain from the front of the front sprocket to the center of the rear axle. Driver must not be able to touch the chain or sprockets while sitting in the cockpit.
  11. Wings. Center section no more than 10 foot square and must be parallel with the roll cage. Right side board, maximum 54" x 20". Left side board maximum, 54" x 26". The wing cannot extend beyond tire as driven. All wings must have 1/16" radius edges or edging. No raw edges. No wood except for ribs or spars inside center section. Nose wings cannot exceed 18"x 24", and must carry car number. Top wings are mandatory to enter a night's event. Cars may finish without a wing if no replacement is available.
  12. Engine Rules. Any multi-cylinder 4 cycle engine larger than 250cc, but not exceeding 636cc will be allowed. All engines must have cockpit-operated electric starter, lever-manual clutch in car, and on-board battery capable of starting a 636cc engine. All engines must also remain chain-driven off of the original countershaft.

 

        KARTS 

The following applies to all Open Wheel Kart classes
(Yard Karts, Junior, Open-Unrestricted)

SAFETY/GENERAL

  1. An ABC fire extinguisher is required in ALL pits.
  2. Kart Chassis:
    1. Cotter keys, safety wire, double nut, lock nut (ny-locks) or lock washer on all bolts in the steering and brake system.  Method listed in order of preference.
    2. No sharp edges or protruding objects.
    3. Nerf bars are mandatory.
    4. Recommended monster bumpers - rear (tall and full width type bumpers)
    5. Kart must be a production built, racing chassis.
    6. Kart must have a JUNIOR racing body for  Junior and Open-Unrestricted.
    7. Steering fairing only allowed in Junior and Open classes.
    8. Numbers must be on a contrasting background and at least 6" tall.  No prismatic numbers allowed.
  3. Protective Gear:  MANDATORY
    1. Helmet must be full faced Snell 2000 with face shield.
    2. Racing neck collar with foam insert.
    3. Gloves with palms made of leather.
    4. Long sleeve jacket, must be racing jacket or heavy jacket (as in Levi type)  No nylon or sweat shirt type.
    5. Long pants, heavy fabric, in good condition, no holes in the knees.
    6. All hair must be encased in helmet and secured.  See NSP rules.
    7. Shoes must cover entire foot and ankle.  No sandals.  High top shoes must be laced, buckled or secured as designed.
    8. Driving or racing suit is optional.  One or two piece heavy weight, abrasion resistant racing driving suit may be used in place of long pants and long sleeve jacket.
  4. Ballast/Weights:
    1. All weights must be painted white and have the kart number on them. 
    2. All weights must be attached to kart with 5/16” (minimum size) grade 8 bolts and be pinned.
    3. No weights allowed on driver.
    4. No weights allowed on nerf bars or rear bumpers.  See NSP rules.
    5. Weights exceeding 7 lbs shall incorporate usage of at least two 5/16” (minimum size) grade 8 bolts and be pinned.  See NSP rules.

Yard Karts

Beginners:  5-8 yrs
Junior        9-12 yrs

The Yard Kart class is intended to provide an avenue for young, entry level go-kart drivers to learn karting safety, driving techniques, driving strategy, flag usage, and build self assurance while in a competitive environment.  Dirtona Raceway also wishes to keep this class an inexpensive entry level class that is fun and fair for all drivers and entertaining to the spectators.  The Yard Kart class is not a sanctioned class, however, Dirtona has adopted several rules from a sanctioning body to establish safety requirements and provide for the orderly conduct of race events.  Please direct your concerns or questions to the Board.


GENERAL:      Dirtona general rules and procedures apply to this class.

  1. AGE: Beginners
    1. Minimum age is the obtained age of 5.  Driver must have had their 5th birthday before being allowed to compete.
    2. Maximum age is 8 years old.  Age is determined by age on Dec. 31st of the previous year you are competing in.
  2. AGE: Juniors
    1. Minimum age is the obtained age of 9.  Driver must have had their 9th birthday before being allowed to compete.
    2. Maximum age is 12 years old.  Age is determined by age on Dec. 31st of the previous year you are competing in.            
  3. MOTOR
    1. Any motor allowed
    2. Any type of air filter
    3. Any exhaust system, not to exceed beyond rear bumper. 
    4. Any type clutch – must be functional
    5. Governor must be connected and functioning properly or throttle stop installed.  The governor or throttle stop must be easily adjusted to limit lap elapse time of kart.  The Race Director may make suggestions on adjustments.  Recommend using throttle stop method as it is easier to adjust.
  4. WEIGHT
    1. No minimum or maximum weight for this class only.
  5. CHASSIS
    1. Any Retail Store purchased Kart, or home made Kart. 
  6. WHEELS & TIRES
    1. Any 5” or 6” aftermarket racing wheel, or wheels that came with retail Kart.
    2. Open tire rule for this class only.
  7. FUEL
    1. Automotive gasoline (no additives)

 

Junior

 

GENERAL:      Dirtona general rules and procedures apply to this class.

  1. AGE: Juniors
    1. Minimum age is the obtained age of 12.  Driver must have had their 12th birthday before being allowed to compete.
    2. Maximum age is 15 years old.  Age is determined by age on Dec. 31st of the previous year you are competing in.            
  2. MOTOR
    1.  Briggs 5 HP Stock Flathead, NSP Tech rules apply
    2.  .500 (Red IKF) or (Turquoise WKA) Restrictor Plate
  3. WEIGHT
    1. 265 lbs minimum with driver.
  4. CHASSIS

GENERAL:  Dirtona general rules and procedures and NSP tech rules apply to this class.

    1. AGE: 
      1. Minimum age is the obtained age of 16.  Driver must have had their 16th birthday before being allowed to compete.
      2. Maximum age: NONE.
